1. Critical queries have appropriate indexes (validated against real query plans)
2. N+1 query patterns removed or constrained (batching, prefetching, joins where appropriate)
3. Connection pooling configured with sane limits and timeouts
4. Read replicas in place (or a documented plan for read/write separation)
5. Slow query logging enabled and reviewed regularly
